This four-part course will introduce the basics of creative coding — the practice of using computer programming for artistic expression. We'll be working with Processing, an open-source programming language built for electronic art, new media, and visual design communities.

 

Led by sound artist and educator Zeynep Özcan, participants will learn the fundamentals of Processing including syntax, styling, variables, data types, functions, variable scope, 2D drawings, and animation.

 

Using Max software, Zeynep will cover the essentials of mapping simple synth parameters to visual components in Processing using Open Sound Control.

 

At the end of the course, participants will create their own unique audiovisual artwork for installation or performance.

 

This course is suitable for visual artists looking to integrate audio into their practice or musicians with an interest in creating multimedia performance and interactive works.

 

Beginners are welcome! No prior experience with Max or Processing language is necessary.

INSTRUCTOR BIO

 

Dr. Zeynep Özcan is a sonic artist, singer, and author. She holds a Ph.D. in Music, an M.A. in History of Architecture, and a B.A. in Philosophy. Her work focuses on the design and composition of interactive virtual sound environments and the applications of animal behavior to sound art works. Works by Dr. Özcan have been performed and presented throughout the world in concerts, exhibitions, and conferences. As a musician, she plays piano and electronics and has performed with several bands and choirs. Dr. Özcan is currently a lecturer at the Department of Performing Arts Technology at the University of Michigan, School of Music, Theatre & Dance.

Cancellation requests made within 48 hours of the start of the event or after it has started will not be honored. Reservations can be transferred to someone else anytime before the start of a class.​
